Mom Appreciation Day

May 10, 2026

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit my mom in Belgium. It was a bit of a last-minute decision, and I was incredibly fortunate to make it happen. During that trip, I came to a meaningful realization: if there is one woman I could truly live with for the rest of my life, it would be my mom, and here’s why. I’ve been single for a long time and have grown deeply accustomed to my space. Most of the time, I can only handle being around people for a few hours before retreating to the comfort of my peaceful home, free from stress, drama, or unnecessary chaos. Solitude has always suited me more than anything else, or it seems like it at my age.

Yet, after spending several days with my mother, I realized something profound—her presence never disrupted my peace. Instead, it brought me comfort, warmth, and a sense of belonging that no one else could replicate. Even after years apart, the bond we share remained unshaken, reminding me that a mother’s love is unlike any other. Mothers hold a special place in our lives because they offer unwavering support, unconditional love, and a connection that time or distance can never truly break. My experience was a powerful reminder of just how extraordinary that bond can be, and why Mother’s Day is such an important celebration.

Mother’s Day is a day set aside to honor mothers and show appreciation for everything they do. It’s a time to celebrate their love, hard work, and the important role they play in our lives. Today, many people celebrate with flowers, cards, and family gatherings, but the idea of honoring mothers has been around for a very long time.

The modern version of Mother’s Day began in the United States when Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother after she passed away. She worked tirelessly to create a national holiday, and because of her efforts, Mother’s Day officially became a national holiday in 1914, celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Around the world, Mother’s Day is celebrated in different ways, with some countries observing special traditions, meals, or festivals, but the purpose remains the same by recognizing and appreciating mothers.

Mother’s Day is special because it gives people the opportunity to thank their mothers for their care, sacrifices, and endless support. Mothers are often the ones who guide, protect, and encourage their children throughout life. Even simple gestures, such as spending quality time together or writing a heartfelt note, can make the day deeply meaningful.

Over the years, Mother’s Day has also become a major holiday for gift-giving, flowers, and cards. While some believe it has become too commercialized, many families continue to focus on its true meaning by showing love and gratitude. There are also some interesting facts tied to the holiday: carnations are the traditional flower associated with Mother’s Day, millions of cards are exchanged each year, and studies have shown that crime rates often decrease on Mother’s Day, likely because families are spending more time together.

In the end, Mother’s Day serves as a powerful reminder to appreciate the women who have such an incredible impact on families and communities. To all the mamas out there, HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
