Memorial Day Reflection
May 25, 2026
As we observe Memorial Day, our community takes time to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice represents a profound commitment to the values of freedom, safety, and peace that shape our daily lives. This day is not only a moment of remembrance, but also an opportunity for gratitude. We recognize that the freedoms we enjoy were made possible through the courage and dedication of those who served and never returned home. Their legacy lives on in the strength of the nation they helped protect.
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, became a federal holiday in 1971. It originated after the Civil War as “Decoration Day,” a time when communities decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags. Today, it honors more than 1.3 million Americans who have died in military service across all branches and conflicts in U.S. history.
As we spend time with family and neighbors this weekend, we pause to reflect with respect and appreciation for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. May we honor them not only in words, but also in how we value and care for the community and freedoms we share today.
